SUSTAINABLE University of Redlands Farm (SURF)
Redlands, CA
Background and History
The Sustainable University of Redlands Farm (SURF) is a mainly volunteer student-operated program under the auspices of the Office of Community Service Learning and is supported by the CA Climate Action Corps Fellows. The outdoor classroom at SURF models how food grown in shared spaces can be donated to promote social equity or sold to the campus food management company to generate income for the farm. The farm includes a fruit orchard, row crops, and raised bed planters. They compost using 3-bay system and receive inputs of leftover produce from the on-campus cafeteria meal prep, and student bucket donations of kitchen scraps.
